Charcoal Kilns (Piedmont)
Uinta County · Wyoming
Erected by Historical Landmark Commission of Wyoming, 1956
The stone's two claims draw argument. The charcoal went chiefly to smelters in the Salt Lake Valley, as the 1971 National Register nomination says, not to the Utah Valley farther south. Its date holds better than some later accounts, which move the kilns to 1877: the nomination and the state historic preservation office both keep about 1869, the year after the railroad arrived. Five kilns stood here as late as 1897. Three stand now, and a fourth survives as a ruin about three feet high.
