Tsunami - Reedsport
Douglas County · Oregon
The panel's AD 1700 has a date. On the evening of January 26, 1700, a Cascadia earthquake estimated near magnitude nine dropped this coast, and the wave it raised crossed the Pacific and reached Japan the next day, where villages recorded a tsunami that no earthquake they had felt could explain. Matching those records to the growth rings of coastal forests the quake had drowned fixed the date. Reedsport sits low on the Umpqua estuary, inside the inundation zones the state maps for the next one.
