The panel sends visitors to South Slough and gives its founding year as 1874. It was 1974. On June 27 of that year NOAA chose Oregon's proposal for South Slough as the nation's first estuarine sanctuary under the Coastal Zone Management Act, with $400,000 to buy and manage land whose forests had been heavily logged and whose wetlands had been filled for farming. Renamed a research reserve in 1985, it covers some 4,700 acres of marsh, mudflat and forest south of Charleston, managed so that those natural processes can come back.
