The Hollering Place
Coos County · Oregon
Camp Castaway was a military errand run aground. The dragoons on the Captain Lincoln were bound for Port Orford, where settlers had fought the local people at Battle Rock the summer before, when the schooner beached on the North Spit in January 1852. For four months the Coos traded fresh food to them for silverware, biscuits and other goods. The camp's site was lost until the archaeologist Scott Byram found it in 2009, and a 2012 excavation joined by archaeologists from the Coos and Coquille tribes turned up the ship's nails and traces of the trading.
