The Old Arrow Tree

Erected by High Noon Lioness Club, 1988
No state plaque stands; two carved boards on the snag stand in. The register says only that the tree is supposed to mark a treaty, and accounts disagree on whose. One makes it the boundary between the Wiyot of the Blue Lake country and the Whilkut and Chilula upriver; another names the Hupa (Natinixwe) and Karuk; a third tells of a war won by the "Korbel," the brothers whose mill town lies half a mile downhill. Passers-by left arrows or twigs in the bark. Before 1913 someone set the offerings alight, and the fire climbed the trunk.
