No state plaque stands here: this bronze is the Pioneer Society's, and it casts no landmark number. Its list needs glossing. The Mountaineers were raised in the northern counties in 1863 for the Bald Hills War against the Hupa (Natinixwe), Chilula, Whilkut and their neighbours. The "Native California" cavalry, cast here as Calvary, were Californios, a San Jose company under Captain José Ramón Pico that spent spring and summer 1864 escorting supply trains from here. Marie Brizard Todd, honoured as a pioneer of 1847, lies in Arcata's Greenwood Cemetery under a headstone giving her birth as 1848.
