The American Family
Provo, Utah County · Utah
Erected by NA
The sculptor who made this was born a few blocks away, and he made almost everything. Avard Fairbanks shaped Angel Moronis for temple spires, Abraham Lincolns for the Capitol, and, because a man has to eat, the charging ram that rode the hood of every Dodge. He earned a doctorate in anatomy so he could get the human body exactly right. Late in a long career he came back to Provo, his birthplace, and cast this: an ordinary family, parents and children together, rendered at heroic scale. He believed art should be plain enough for a child to understand.
