Site of York's Cabin, Calistoga

Two brothers-in-law raised the first cabins at the hot springs in October 1845, within weeks of arriving with the Grigsby-Ide wagons: John York here, and David Hudson across the corner, where a service station now stands and nothing is cast. Both are counted among the Bear Flag men of June 1846. York's own obituary, though, says he was away on other duty the morning the flag went up at Sonoma, and credits his wife with helping to make it. The Kortum family built his cabin into their house, which stood until 1930.

What the plaque says

Site of John York's Cabin Among the first houses of Calistoga was John York's log cabin, constructed in October 1845. Rebuilt as part of the home of the Kortum family, it was used as a residence until razed in 1930. Nearby was the cabin of David Hudson also built in October 1845. Calistoga was named by Samuel Brannan in 1859. California Registered Historical Landmark No. 682. Plaque placed by the California State Park Commission, City of Calistoga and the Napa County Historical Society, August 22, 1959.
