Sam Brannan Store, Calistoga

No bronze marks Sam Brannan's store, only a routed wooden sign in front of what is now a private house. The register credits the store with $50,000 in a single year, a figure Brannan had long since dwarfed at his store outside Sutter's Fort, outfitting the first rush of miners he had helped summon. Calistoga ran the other way. He bought a square mile at the hot springs in 1859 and poured fortune after fortune into the resort. It never paid, a divorce split what was left, and he died in 1889 with nothing.
