The Sharpsteen Museum's 2014 plaque gives Brannan a run of titles, pioneer to philanthropist, and leaves out the one San Francisco remembered. In June 1851 a Committee of Vigilance tried John Jenkins in Brannan's storeroom and hanged him in Portsmouth Square that night; his church cast Brannan out that September. The plaque dates the cottage to about 1862 and says it was moved here in 1978. The register gives 1866 for the resort's cottages, and the inn it now belongs to calls it the one still on its original site. No state plaque stands here.
What the plaque says
Sam Brannan Cottage Registered Historical Landmark #685 Built circa 1862, this cottage was part of the original Brannan's Hot Springs Resort grounds, moved to this location and fully restored in 1978. Dedicated to the memory of Samuel Brannan founder of Calistoga pioneer, promoter, preacher, politician, philanthropist, railroad and land developer, newspaperman, and California's first millionaire. This plaque is proudly placed by the Sharpsteen Museum of Calistoga History and its members May 1, 2014
