Site of Sacramento Union

The Union was the oldest daily west of the Mississippi and it ran a hundred and forty-three years, from 1851 to 1994. What it is remembered for is four months of freelance work. In 1866 a broke thirty-year-old named Samuel Clemens talked his friend James Anthony into paying his passage to the Sandwich Islands, and the twenty-five letters he sent back made him. The paper leaned on that connection for the next century. It moved to this address in 1852, and nothing here records either the century or the four months.
