Eagle Theater

Sacramento, Sacramento County · California

The theatre was made out of ships. Timbers and canvas came off vessels abandoned at San Francisco by crews who had gone to the diggings, and in 1849 they were put up here as the first building in California raised to be a theatre. It held three hundred and fifty on the floor and fifty in a balcony reached by an outside ladder. The flood of January 1850 destroyed it and the company left for San Francisco. A plank dug up in 1972 is why a reproduction stands here now.
