Site of Pioneer Mutual Volunteer Firehouse

Sacramento organised its first fire company in February 1850, eight months before there was a state of California to belong to. It had reason. The city was built of wood and canvas and lit by open flame, and in 1852 a single fire took something like four fifths of it. Engine Company No. 1 moved into a building on this corner in 1854, and the department stayed volunteer until the legislature made it a paid service in 1872. A restaurant occupies the ground now and nothing marks the company.
