Sánchez Adobe

Before this was Francisco Sánchez's house, it was Pruristac, a village of the Aramai, a Ramaytush Ohlone people. Mission Dolores built a farm outpost on it in 1786 with Indigenous labor, and by just after 1800 most Ramaytush had died; a cross on the grounds marks the outpost. The bronze skips from Sánchez's Mexican offices to a respected American citizen. Between them, in December 1846, he held Yerba Buena's American alcalde, Lt. Washington Bartlett, hostage, and on January 2, 1847, led the Californios at Santa Clara, the war's only such fight in Northern California.

Sanchez Adobe The home of Francisco Sanchez (b. 1805, d. 1862), alcalde of San Francisco and commandante of militia under the Mexican Republic, grantee of the 8,926-acre Rancho San Pedro, and later a respected American citizen. His house, built 1842-46, afterwards was owned and remodeled by General Edward Kirkpatrick. It was purchased by the County of San Mateo in 1947 to be preserved as a public museum. Historical Landmark No. 391 California State Park Commission Monument base erected by the County of San Mateo in cooperation with the San Mateo County Historical Association Dedicated June 6, 1953
