Riverton Tithing Yard

Riverton, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by DUP, 1980

Before money reached the farms, the church took its tithe in kind, and Riverton brought its tenth to this hill. On ground bought from Samuel Howard in 1886 — a slope locals called Tithing Yard Hill, running down toward the Jordan — the ward built a working barnyard for the offering: an office and scales to weigh it in, a granary and root cellar to store it, haystacks and mangers, a barn, and pastures for the cattle and produce the members drove in. Freeman Lloyd ran it. After twenty-seven years, in 1913, it closed.

What the plaque says

In 1886, the Riverton Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints purchased choice land for a tithing yard from Samuel L. Howard Sr., located between 12400 and 12600 South, one mile northeast of this park. Members brought one tenth of their crops and animals for their tithing. Freeman R. Lloyd, first supervisor. On level ground was an office building, weight scales, a granary, large root cellar, haystacks, feed managers and barn. The cattle yard and pasture sloped to the Jordan River. Nov. 28, 1913, George W. Bills bought the ground and the tithing yard was closed after 27 years of usage.
