The bronze in the boulder says the United States flag was first raised in Southern California on this spot on July 29, 1846. Americans had run one up over a hide house at La Playa in 1829, without any authority to do it, which is the work the word first is doing here. Four thousand people watched this plaque go into the stone on July 29, 1906, sixty years to the day. It is a private memorial. The landmark is the plaza, and the plaza has no state plaque.
