Casa de Machado y Silvas

This house is called the Casa de la Bandera because of what was hidden in it. When American forces reoccupied San Diego in 1846, the Mexican flag was cut down from the plaza pole and Maria Antonia Machado is said to have taken it home. Her sister Guadalupe later married Albert Smith, the American who had climbed the pole to raise the other flag. Maria Antonia ran a restaurant out of the front rooms from the 1850s. Nothing cast marks the landmark; the sign here is a printed park panel.
