Exchange Hotel
San Diego, San Diego County · California
California registered this site in 1951 for a meeting of Masons who founded the first lodge in Southern California. The register's own words are that a tablet marks it, and no tablet does. What stands is a printed park panel headed La Casa de Rodriguez, Racine and Laramie, running from a one-room adobe through a hotel, a cigar store, the fire of 1872 and a 1974 reconstruction, and never mentioning the lodge. The Herald called Masons to the Exchange for the evening of June 20, 1851.
