Peralta House

San Leandro, Alameda County · California
Erected by California Centennials Commission, 1949

The builder of the county's first brick house is credited with raising the American flag at Monterey. William P. Toler, a naval midshipman in 1846, married Ignacio Peralta's daughter María Antonia in 1853 and in 1860 put up this house for his father-in-law in three months, hauling handmade bricks from an Alameda Slough brickyard in a straw-lined wagon. The brick is under stucco now. Ignacio died here in 1874, his widow sold in 1875, and the Alta Mira Club, a women's club, has owned it since 1926. The grant was dated August 3, not the October 20 cast here.
