Mills Hall
Oakland, Alameda County · California
Mills Hall stands in Huichin, the land of the Chochenyo-speaking Ohlone, on ground the building's 1971 register nomination says had held an Indian rancheria. Cyrus Mills bought 55 acres here in 1870, construction began that June, and in 1871 his and Susan Mills's seminary came down from Benicia. The building held nearly the whole school: classrooms, the president's rooms, quarters for teachers and students, a music room, lecture halls and a hospital ward. Nothing cast marks it, and the state's register text still misprints the college as Hue college.
