Historical Marker
Oregon Nisei Veterans WWII Memorial Highway
Hood River County · Oregon
On November 29, 1944, American Legion Post 22 took sixteen names off the honor roll it had put up at the Hood River County Courthouse, every one a Nisei soldier and a U.S. citizen. Hundreds of letters of protest reached the Legion. In January 1945 Frank Hachiya of Hood River was killed in the Philippines. The Legion's national commander called for the names to go back, and on April 9, 1945, fifteen of the sixteen were repainted. The legislature named Highway 35 for Oregon's Nisei veterans in 2022, and this marker was dedicated in November 2025.
