Northwest Nazarene University
Canyon County · Idaho
The school began smaller than its name. Classes opened on September 13, 1913, as the Idaho Holiness School, a grade school and Bible school meeting in a Mennonite church in Nampa, organized by Eugene Emerson, a rancher and lumberman who had underwritten the town's first Church of the Nazarene. It took the names Northwest Holiness College and then Northwest Nazarene College in 1916, when the theologian H. Orton Wiley became president, and gave its first four degrees in 1917. Emerson was elected mayor of Nampa in 1923. The college became a university on September 1, 1999.
