Mt. Nebo Elementary School
Monroe, Ouachita County · Louisiana
Erected 2024
Mt. Nebo's walls were paid for by many hands. The Monroe Free Press reports that construction combined money from the Rosenwald Fund, the local Black community, the white community and school boards, with Mt. Nebo Baptist Church leading local fundraising. The building had four classrooms, and two classes often shared one. Early student Oscar Augurson recalled, "It was congested but it worked." Students used secondhand textbooks passed down from white schools. The Rosenwald Fund helped build 5,388 schools in 15 states. The marker here was the Jewish American Society for Historic Preservation's first for a Rosenwald school.
