Fort Miro

Monroe, Ouachita County · Louisiana
Erected 1961

Governor Esteban Miró sent swivel guns and munitions, but the money and labor for the fort that carries his name came mostly from Don Juan Filhiol. In August 1790 Filhiol asked for funds and proposed the name. His first plan, a palisade of about 1,020 upright logs, was dropped when promised timber never arrived, so the builders laid logs horizontally and raised four covered bastions with iron spikes along the rim. It was finished in February 1791, and Filhiol then governed the district from his own house inside it. A 1973 dig could not settle where the fort stood.
