Mr. Jack Hayes / Mrs. Ann Stapp Hayes
Monroe, Ouachita County · Louisiana
The junior college linked to Jack Hayes's drive opened as Ouachita Parish Junior College on September 28, 1931, and then changed names again and again. In 1934 it became the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University, in 1949 Northeast Junior College of LSU, and in 1950 an independent four-year school, Northeast Louisiana State College. It became Northeast Louisiana University in 1969, when it first granted doctorates, and the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 1999, a change Wikipedia calls controversial and says a 1995 state law required.
