Morgan Mill Tabernacle

Morgan Mill, Erath County · Texas
Erected 1994

The mill came first. The Handbook of Texas says M. C. Laughlin and J. R. Billingsley moved a corn and wheat mill to the North Paluxy River in 1874. Criss Brooks started the first store in 1876. In 1877 George Morgan bought an interest in the mill, and a post office opened that year. The name changed from Morgan's Mill to Morgan Mill in 1892. The town had 143 residents in 1900 and 261 in 1940, and in later decades it drew retirees and commuters to the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The plaque dates the tabernacle itself to 1910.

What the plaque says

Morgan Mill Tabernacle The community of Morgan Mill, named for early settler George Bryan Morgan, traces its history to the mid-19th century. A post office was established in 1877. Several community church congregations shared a brush arbor in the summers for revivals and other meetings. In 1910 the brush arbor was replaced with this permanent structure, named the Morgan Mill Tabernacle. In addition to serving the churches, the tabernacle also was used by the local school and other community organizations. It remains in use as a community gathering place. (1994)
