Mission San Franscico Xavier de Najera

San Antonio, Bexar County · Texas
Erected 1936

This short-lived mission was a promise kept. The Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo had pledged a separate mission for the Ranchería Grande Indians when he secured the services of one of their chiefs, Juan Rodríguez, as guide for his expedition. He founded it for them on March 12, 1722, one league south of San Antonio de Valero. It endured with little success until 1726, when it was merged with Valero, and in 1731 its lands were regranted to Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña Mission, which still stands to the south.
