Leamington Bell & Medallion (2) Markers
Leamington, Millard County · Utah
Erected by NA
Leamington is a town the Sevier River had to be argued into allowing. In 1871 settlers from Oak City threw a dam across the river to irrigate this dry ground; it washed out the day after they built it. They rebuilt, the water held, and by 1873 the first homes went up. Frank Young — a nephew of Brigham Young — named the place for Leamington in England. The railroad came in 1879, and the town made ties and charcoal for a while. The bell and medallion at the town center mark that stubborn beginning.
