Topaz Museum
Delta, Millard County · Utah
For decades Delta didn't talk about what had happened out on the flats. Then in 1982 a high-school teacher, Jane Beckwith, sent her journalism students to interview the townspeople who'd worked at the camp — and the silence broke. Neighbors started bringing in what they'd kept: a trunk of artifacts, then hundreds of them. The museum that grew from that assignment opened its own Delta building in 2017, holding the art made behind the wire — Chiura Obata's paintings, the camp newspaper, the woodblocks — so the incarceration would be remembered by the county that housed it.
