Historical Marker
Judge Elijah Gossett
Crockett, Houston County · Texas
Erected 1936
Elijah Gossett was born near Rutherford Creek, Tennessee, on February 1, 1788, and married Elizabeth Stone Edwards in Maury County around 1810. The Handbook of Texas says the family reached Texas in 1833 and settled on Hurricane Bayou. He and his three sons each received a bounty grant of 320 acres for Texas Revolution service. It dates his election as chief justice of Houston County to 1840, a year earlier than the grave marker does, and puts the Centennial Commission's marker in 1937. He died on November 24, 1848, and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery.
