Colonel David Alexander Nunn
Crockett, Houston County · Texas
Erected 1973
The Handbook of Texas lists David Alexander Nunn and D. A. Nunn Jr., both of Crockett, among the first directors of the Eastern Texas Railroad, chartered November 8, 1900 to link Lufkin and Crockett. The Texas-Louisiana Lumber Company built it to serve its mill at Ratcliff, laying twenty miles of track from Lufkin to Kennard in 1901 and 1902. The St. Louis Southwestern bought it in 1906. Service ended May 1, 1921, but the state appealed the closure to the U.S. Supreme Court and the line was not abandoned until 1924.
