A TXGenWeb biography gives Monroe's birth as March 15, 1818, in Albemarle County, Virginia, and his move to Texas as 1842. The 1850 and 1860 censuses list him as a merchant; in 1880 he appears as a clerk in a store. He married Rachael Jane Allbright on December 31, 1846; she died on November 11, 1866. The page names eight children, from Sarah Jane in 1848 to Armistead Jr. in 1864. He built a two-story house on what is now 7th Street, later owned by Col.
