Jesus Maria

Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County · California

The town is named for a man who grew vegetables, and nobody wrote down which man. He raised melons and produce for the miners here in the early 1850s, in a placer district whose people were Mexican, French, Chilean and Italian. Nothing is left of the town. A visit in 2006 found a stream, one abandoned wooden building, and no marker of any kind, and the state has never placed one. The name is the only thing that survived him.
