I.O.O.F. Hall, Mokelumne Hill

Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County · California

The third floor is the reason this is a landmark. The building went up in 1854 with two storeys, and the Odd Fellows added a third for their lodge room later, which is said to have made it the first three-storey building in California outside the coastal towns. That is a superlative with two qualifiers built into it. The lodge was the kind of institution that outlasted the gold, and the hall is still on the corner. No plaque marks it.
