Big Bar

Jackson, Amador County · California

This landmark is registered in two counties and marked in neither. The Mokelumne is the county line, so Big Bar belongs to Amador and Calaveras at once, and the plaque hunters who keep the missing list found nothing on either bank. The register says the river was mined here in 1848 and that a whale boat ferry ran from 1849 until the first bridge went up about 1852. The site is a boat launch now, on the whitewater run.
