Hector Haight Settlement on Haight's Creek
Kaysville, Davis County · Utah
Erected by BSA, 1976
Sent north from Salt Lake in 1847 to find winter feed for the pioneers' cattle, Hector Haight kept going until he found a clear stream running out of the mountains and built his cabin beside it. The creek still carries his name. His grove of planted shade trees became Blooming Grove — a welcome rest stop for the thousands of gold-rush emigrants on the Salt Lake Cutoff, where Haight offered them lodging and a blacksmith. Both Kaysville and Farmington claim him as their first settler. The creek runs mostly hidden now beneath the town he started.
