Governor Stoneman Adobe, Los Robles
San Marino, Los Angeles County · California
Erected by California State Parks; and Conference of California Historical Societies, 1959
George Stoneman commanded Union cavalry, was captured in Georgia and traded back for a Confederate general, and came west to farm four hundred acres he called Los Robles. Rutherford Hayes was entertained here in 1880. Elected governor in 1882, Stoneman had to surrender his army pension to take the office. In July 1885 the house burned uninsured, taking his war papers with it, and he left office poorer than he arrived. Nothing of the estate remains.
What the plaque says
This was the site of ‘Los Robles', the 400 acre estate of Governor George Stoneman. Here in 1880 President Rutherford B. Hayes was entertained. The first schoolhouse in the San Gabriel Valley, California's first tennis club, and the first municipal Christmas tree of San Marino were located here.
