Gable Mansion

The bronze calls it Victorian Italianate; Joseph Baird, an art historian at UC Davis, called it a locally unique variant of the Stick style, and its builders, Gilbert & Son of Woodland, mixed Italianate brackets, Stick trim, Eastlake columns and a Gothic gable. One account puts its cost at $16,000, another at $36,000. The Gables kept it until Robert McWhirk bought it from the estate in the early 1970s, and his name is cast on the 1974 bronze beside theirs. It is a private house, seen from First Street.

Gable Mansion The Gable Mansion is an outstanding example of 19th century Victorian Italianate architecture, one of the last of its style, size, and proportion in California. This structure was built in 1885 for Amos and Harvey Gable, pioneer Yolo County ranchers. California Registered Historical Landmark No. 864 Plaque placed by the State Department of Parks and Recreation in cooperation with the Gable family and Robert L. McWhirk, June 1, 1974.
