First Presbyterian Church of West
West, McLennan County · Texas
Erected 1979
The town of West grew from the railroad. The Handbook of Texas says the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad came through in 1881, and the town took the name of Thomas M. West, who owned the quarter section it stood on. West opened a store in 1883, a hotel in 1889 and a bank in 1893, and the town incorporated in 1892. Newspapers included the West Crescent, the West News and the West Times. Allen's Academy was its first school. After 1900 Czech and German newcomers arrived in large numbers.
