First Church of Christ, Scientist (2) Marker
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected by NA, 1973
Christian Science reached Utah early. The state's first Church of Christ, Scientist was organized in Salt Lake City in 1891, and by 1898 the small congregation had raised this building of brick and kyune sandstone, designed by the ever-busy architect Walter Ware. It is the oldest Christian Science church in Utah, and counted among the oldest anywhere still in continuous use for the faith — a modest, durable landmark of one more religious tradition that found room in a city built by another. Mary Baker Eddy's young movement had found a western foothold.
