Filhiol Mound
Logtown, Ouachita County · Louisiana
A platform mound of the Coles Creek culture, Filhiol Mound was built around 700 CE and abandoned around 1200 CE, according to charcoal from beneath it. It stands about 7 feet high, with a base roughly 100 feet on a side, on a natural levee of the Ouachita River. In the 1850s a cemetery was started on its summit, and that burial ground is credited with helping to preserve the mound. It sits on private land beside U.S. 165, about 11.7 miles south of Interstate 20, and is for looking at from the road.
