First Southern Pine Fourdrinier Kraft Linerboard in United States
West Monroe, Ouachita County · Louisiana
A corrugated-box industry history credits Brown Paper Company of West Monroe with making the first kraft paper and linerboard from southern pine fiber, and dates it to 1923. A 1924 company newsletter, The Super Calender, profiled the brand-new mill. The mill then changed hands several times: Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation bought the company in 1955, followed by Johns Manville, Riverwood International and, now, Graphic Packaging, whose complex stands behind this marker on Jonesboro Road. Linerboard is the heavy paperboard used for the flat faces of corrugated packaging.
