Eyes Westward Statue
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County · Utah
Erected, 2008
The Sons of Utah Pioneers placed this statue in 2008, and its title says what it depicts: a pioneer with eyes turned west, toward the valley and the future rather than the country left behind. It's a fitting image for the spot — the mouth of Emigration Canyon, where the first companies came down out of the mountains into the Salt Lake Valley. Among the heritage park's many bronzes, this one distills the whole pioneer posture into a single gaze: forward, into hard and unknown ground.
