Jose Antonio Estudillo finished this U-shaped adobe in 1829. Its rescue came from a novel it has nothing to do with. John D. Spreckels bought the house in 1906 to anchor the end of a trolley line and hired the architect Hazel Wood Waterman to make it match Ramona; she took off the cupola and the balcony because the book does not mention them. Tommy Getz then advertised it as Ramona's Marriage Place. The fiction saved the building by making it less like itself. The bronze here is a 1970 national landmark plaque, not the state's.
