Dow Brazil Killing
Carter County · Oklahoma
Both men carried badges. Ballew was a deputy under Sheriff Buck Garrett and had made his name in the oil field in its untamed days, while Braziel had served for years under the federal government, once as a deputy U.S. marshal and later with the internal revenue department. The Daily Ardmoreite called their feud old and widely discussed, and wrote that friends of both men were not surprised by the shooting. Six wounds were counted on Braziel's body. That November a jury acquitted Ballew after less than an hour.
