DeSmet ('l'lkhwi'lus)
Benewah County · Idaho
The schools at DeSmet were ones the chiefs had asked for. Chief Saltese wrote to the Sisters of Charity of Providence in 1870, and tribal chiefs traveled to Vancouver, Washington, to press the request; the sisters opened their girls' school in 1878, beside the Jesuits' school for boys. Two school buildings burned, in 1881 and in the early 1900s, and the mission church burned in April 1939. The school closed in 1974, with few sisters left, and the tribe took title to the buildings. The three-story brick sisters' building burned on February 3, 2011.
