Corpus Christi de la Ysleta

Ysleta, El Paso County · Texas
Erected 1936

For the Tigua of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, this has always been San Antonio's church. The Pueblo says its people stayed faithful to Saint Anthony, patron of Isleta Pueblo, the mother pueblo near present Albuquerque, through every change of name. Spaniards called the place Corpus Christi de los Tihuas, and it was also Sacramento de la Ysleta and San Antonio de la Ysleta. The mission is now dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, but San Antonio stands in a niche above the entrance, and his feast day on June 13 brings a morning Mass followed by traditional dancing.
