Captain Frank Jones
Ysleta, El Paso County · Texas
Erected 1936
Company D belonged to the Frontier Battalion, six companies of seventy-five Texas Rangers each, organized in 1874 on Governor Richard Coke's recommendation under Maj. John B. Jones. Its men fought raiders but also arrested lawbreakers, escorted prisoners, guarded jails and attended courts. They settled the Mason County War, cleaned outlaws out of Kimble County in 1877, ended the Horrell-Higgins feud and captured Sam Bass. A 1900 court ruling gutted its power by letting only commissioned officers serve criminal process.
