Colon Campbell Fur Post
Brown County · South Dakota
The bronze calls him only very important. Wanatan, the Charger, was a son of the Sisseton leader Wakinyanduta, Red Thunder, and as a young man fought for the British in the War of 1812, wounded charging the American works at Fort Sandusky and given a captain's commission afterward. He led the Cuthead band of the Ihanktonwana, the Yanktonai, who wintered along the Elm. The dates here are not settled: other accounts give his birth about 1795 and his death anywhere from 1840 to 1848, killed by his own people near Beaver Creek in present North Dakota.
