Savo Monument
Brown County · South Dakota
Erected by South Dakota Historical Society, 1960
The corner holds the rest of the story the monument tells. Savo Hall, built in 1899 by the Finnish National Society of Savo for plays, concerts and temperance meetings, is the last of four Finnish-American halls in South Dakota and joined the National Register in 1985. The congregation's 1888 church fell to a tornado on July 2, 1921; its replacement was designed by Hella Keranen, the pastor's fifteen-year-old daughter. Finns reached this Little Finland on the state line in the 1880s, from Finland and from mines in Michigan, Minnesota and Wyoming.
